What changes the answer
Sustained exhaustion
Rest no longer restores your normal capacity and work demands feel chronically difficult to meet.
Distance or cynicism
You feel increasingly detached, irritable, numb, or unable to connect with the value of the work.
Reduced effectiveness
Concentration, decisions, confidence, and output are changing despite increased effort.
Assess health and work at the same time
Exhaustion, sleep problems, low mood, anxiety, and physical symptoms can have multiple explanations. A health professional can assess what is happening and advise on safety, treatment, or time away.
At the same time, record workload, hours, emotional demands, autonomy, support, conflict, and job insecurity. These are not background details; they may be part of the problem that needs action.
Ask for change at the level of the work
A useful conversation identifies which demand, process, or responsibility must change. “I need less stress” is difficult to act on; “we need to remove two projects or move their deadlines” creates a decision.
- Define what work must pause now.
- Confirm priorities, ownership, and hours in writing.
- Set a short review date and a route for escalation.

Questions people often ask
Is burnout a medical diagnosis?
Terminology and clinical use vary. Do not self-diagnose from one symptom; seek an assessment that considers other possible conditions.
Will a holiday fix burnout?
Time away may help, but symptoms often return if the underlying demands and work organisation remain unchanged.
