What changes the answer
One goal
Know whether you want awareness, temporary flexibility, workload clarity, leave, or a formal accommodation process.
One clear request
Managers can respond more usefully to a specific proposal than to a conversation with no defined next step.
One follow-up
End by confirming what was agreed, who else may be involved, and when you will review the arrangement.
A simple conversation structure
Start with context, describe the work impact, make a request, and pause. For example: “I want to discuss a health situation that has been affecting my concentration. I can continue working, but clearer weekly priorities would help. Could we try that for the next month?”
You can decide in advance whether you will name your condition. If you feel pressured, it is reasonable to say that you would prefer to keep medical details private and focus on work needs.
Prepare for more than one possible response
A supportive response may still be vague. Ask what will happen next. If the response is poor, avoid arguing about everything in the room. Take notes, give yourself time, and consider another appropriate contact.
- Choose a private meeting with enough time.
- Bring two or three written points.
- Send a short factual summary afterwards.

Questions people often ask
Should I speak in person or write an email?
A conversation can feel more human, while an email creates a record. Many people use both: a short meeting followed by a factual written summary.
What if I become emotional?
Emotion does not invalidate your request. Notes, a short script, and permission to pause can help you return to the practical purpose of the meeting.
