What changes the answer

The barrier

Describe what part of the work is difficult: concentration, interruptions, changing priorities, hours, sensory load, or recovery time.

The adjustment

Propose a change that is specific enough to test and flexible enough to discuss with the employer.

The review

Temporary arrangements are easier to evaluate when there is a clear start date, review date, and success measure.

Examples that focus on work

Possible requests include written priorities after meetings, fewer last-minute schedule changes, a quieter workstation, protected focus time, regular check-ins, flexibility for appointments, or a staged return after leave.

The best request is not necessarily the largest. A small operational change may solve the immediate problem while you decide whether formal support is needed.

Prepare evidence without surrendering all privacy

A formal process may ask for documentation of functional needs. Ask what information is required, who will receive it, and how it will be used. Use official country guidance or qualified advice for legal questions.

  • Name the essential job outcome you can still deliver.
  • Explain the barrier in practical language.
  • Suggest one or two workable options and a review date.

Questions people often ask

Do accommodations have to be permanent?

No. Depending on the situation, a change may be temporary, reviewed after a trial period, or adjusted as your needs and role change.

Can my employer refuse my preferred option?

Processes and duties vary by country. An employer may discuss alternatives, which is why it helps to define the barrier and the outcome rather than only one solution.
