What changes the answer
Request a meeting
“Could we schedule a private conversation about a health situation affecting my work and a possible temporary adjustment?”
Set a boundary
“I would prefer to keep the medical details private, but I can explain the work impact and what would help.”
Confirm next steps
“To make sure I understood, I will send a short summary of what we agreed and the review date.”
Choose words that match your objective
For workload clarity: “My current health situation is making rapid priority changes difficult. Could we agree on the three most important outcomes each week?”
For flexibility: “I am managing a health issue and would like to discuss a temporary schedule adjustment while I stabilise. I can explain how I would keep the work covered.”
Keep an exit sentence ready
If the discussion becomes too personal or confusing, use a prepared pause: “I want to answer carefully, so I would like to take this question away and come back to you.” A pause lets you check facts and choose what to share.
- Avoid promising that the situation will never affect work again.
- Avoid sharing more detail simply to fill an uncomfortable silence.
- Avoid leaving without a next step or review point.

Questions people often ask
Can I copy these scripts word for word?
Yes, but adapt them to your relationship, country, role, and goal. The safest script is one you understand and can say naturally.
Should I mention my diagnosis in the first sentence?
Only if you have decided that naming it supports your goal. You can begin with the work impact and decide later whether more detail is useful.
